Many people have the dream of being their own boss, owning their own company, being able to work at home, customizable hours, and being able to pay themselves however much they want to work and charge. This is the dream for most of us, and not very many of us ever achieve it. The question is why? What makes freelancing such a difficult market to make your presence known in, what secrets do our freelancing gurus have that they don’t share with us?
The answer is, they dont have any secrets. Nothing about this market is a secret, besides personal methods in advertising, seo tactics, etc. There’s nothing they know that you don’t have the ability to learn. So what steps should we take in starting our new careers?
Step #1 – Define Success and Failure
Before we even start, we need to know what our limits are. We want to know when we are suceeding, and when it’s time to call it quits. Defining this in the beginning can save a lot of time and stress, and help you know when it’s time to back out before it’s too late.
Let’s say I just quit my big 9-5 job with around 5,000 in savings ready to invest into my new company, with another 10,000 in savings on the side to pay for my neccessities in the mean time. So, with this, we need to think — I have a 3 month period of time I would like to cover, and if i’m below $x,xxx amount of money, then it’s not going the proper direction, if i’m above $xx,xxx then it’s definately worth my time.
So we’ll just say, within a 3 month period, I want to be at $7,000. This would mean that i’ve sustained my $5,000 investment from the initial period, and earned another $2,000 from this. Meaning i’m MAKING money, which is good.
None of these are very actual numbers, and you’ll have to determine your savings and investment amounts on your own, but define where you draw the line, and where you can still be comfortable to suceed.
Step #2 – The Idea Behind the Matter
Now that we know what we can invest, how we’re going to pay our bills until we see some income, and we’re ready to go, we need to make sure that we have our idea set in stone. We can always expand on this idea later on in life, but in order to make profit, we need to have a solid object that we can market and profit from before making it our every dream come true.
Take some time, write down what you want to accomplish, figure out what the neccessities are for it, and then figure out what you can skimp out on so your project is running, making proffit on, and then add later on in life.
Step #3 – The Investment
Now that we have our project, we need to map out our investment money. We have to have money for the development, marketing, search engine optimization, maintenance and any neccssary full-time/part-time staff pay-offs.
Now obviously, the more of this you can do yourself, the better off and cheaper you’ll have your project, but on the upside, if you invest into having others build your project, you can take that time to further expand your project, keep building your idea, find better ways to market, write content, whatever it is you need to do to make your site successful!
Step #4 – Deployment
Now that we have everything mapped out, everything is running in at least a beta form, we have our SEO integrated and our marketing strategies ready to go. We need to deploy our site. This means publishing multiple articles of content, putting up all items for sale, publishing your site live, submitting to search engines, getting your analytics up and running, and having your advertisement schemes implemented.
Once you’ve reached this phase, there’s no turning back. You need to ride your project out and put in all the effort you can into making it succeed or fail, the choice is yours.
Step #5 – Determine if you suceeding or have already failed.
Your site will require a lot of work. Your marketting and advertisement will eat up the majority of your budget, and you’re going to need to determine if your project is succeeding, or still has the potential to.
If on my first day I had 100 visitors, and then the next day I had 6, then 3, then 4, and then 2, my site obviously is just dying off. If I still have enough budget, I can reanalyze my strategies and fix the problem, or I need to realize this idea just isn’t my niche.
But on the other side, if I have 100 visitors, then 200, then 300, then 400, and i’m not quite making a lot of money yet, it still has the potential to keep increasing to making more. My site is steadily improving, and whatever it is i’m doing is working! So now just keep up the good work, and hopefully the numbers can match up in a month.
In a sum for this article, your website needs a lot of work, a lot of planning, and a lot of strategy to make it work. And ultimately, you need to know when to call it quits, or at least try another niche. I hope this article has helped some of you out in starting our redefining your freelancing careers, whether it be in web development, ecommerce, or something as simple as blogging.

I’m sure most of you have realized on your own sites, that spam is no longer just limited to your inbox. It’s everywhere! If you’ve faced this problem, or want to prepare for it in the future, i’ve prepared this slightly-indepth article on some simple measures you can take to help prevent your own demise.
The spammers’ aim is not to redirect some of your traffic to their site, which is the obvious initial conclusion; it is to increase their (or their clients’) ranking in search engines. Most search engines now count in a site’s ranking how many other Websites have linked to it. By leaving comments on your site, the spammers’ sites can achieve a slightly higher search engine ranking.
The spammers’ job is to get around spam-blockers and target the security of individual Websites; though occasionally they do so on a manual basis, by far the most common forms of comment spam are achieved with spam “bots” or scripts. Unfortunately, many site owners don’t focus on their Websites as their day job, which can make adapting to spam bots difficult.
Rules of Thumb
When you find that your site is the victim of comment spam, it’s easy to react strongly, on a per-case basis, rather than look at the bigger picture. These Rules of Thumb should help you keep things in perspective.
The most important of these rules is: don’t take it personally. Spammers don’t want to degrade your site. They simply want to get people to their sites and make a larger profit.
1. Don’t Ban Specific IP Addresses
Don’t bother banning IP addresses. Although this is the most logical thing to do, it rarely helps much. Most comment-spammers bounce requests off other computers and servers, so you’ll likely never be able to eradicate them from your site entirely.
As a Comment Spammer explained in this interview at The Register, “So Sam (a comment spammer), like other link spammers, uses the thousands of ‘open proxies’ on the net. These are machines which, by accident (read: clueless sysadmins) or design (read: clueless managers) are set up so that anyone, anywhere, can access another Website through them. Usually intended for internal use, so a company only needs one machine facing the net, they’re actually hard to lock down completely.”
2. Don’t Allow HTML
There is no reason for a user of your site to be able to write HTML or JavaScript. This should be obvious, but there are many Websites that allow users to use either, or both, of these languages.
If you feel the need to allow the user to include links, there are a number of ways by which you can code to accommodate that functionality, without making your site vulnerable to attack. The most common method is to inform the user that all URLs will be converted to links automatically, then convert any content that starts with http:// to a link.
3. Use Non-Descriptive Form Names
Good programming requires the use of descriptive names, but in avoiding comment spam, you should stay away from names that describe a form’s fields. Form element names like “Comment” make it too easy for spammers to access your comment system.
4. Use rel=”nofollow” for All Links
If you allow site users to include links in their comments, add rel=”nofollow” to the tag, as shown below:
<a href="http://www.chasehutchins.com/" rel=”nofollow”>Super Cool Blog</a>
This technique allows search engines bots to ignore the link, so the spammer gains no benefit from adding links to your comments.
Stopping Spam
You can stop comment spam via two approaches. The first tackles the problem before the comment is posted; the second addresses spamming after the fact.
1. Differentiate Between Spammers and Regular Users
Differentiating between spammers and regular users involves requiring your human posters to identify themselves as such though an extra step inserted in the commenting process. This is possibly the most widely used approach to avoiding comment spam, and includes two options.
The Turing Test
The most commonly used Turing Test (named after a computer scientist Alan Turing) is called CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart).
It involves adding to your site’s comments area an image that contains a random piece of text. The text must be somewhat tarnished or blurred so that a human can read it, but a computer cannot. The commenter is asked to copy this text exactly into a form field before they submit the form.
This process makes it easy to guarantee that the commenter is a person, not a bot. It does not solve the problem of a human being spamming your comments section manually. However, as most spamming is carried out automatically by bots, this technique should stop most comment spam.
Advantages
Constant updating of your code is not necessary, as this technique is not code-reliant.
Disadvantages
Users are forced to perform an extra step, which does not benefit them, in order to submit their comments. This can be a serious downfall if your Website is just starting out and you’re trying to encourage people to comment.
More information on CAPTCHAS can be found at Capcha.net. A free resource that explains how to use CAPTCHAS on your site is available at Human Verify.
User Authentication
Using this method, the site owner requires all users to set up a username and password before they can comment on the site. If the administrator then finds a user spamming the site, he or she can ban that username or email address.
This approach works in two ways. Firstly, spammers don’t want to be identified and therefore will be unlikely to sign up. But, even if they do, the hurdle of having to take the time to sign up in order to spam (and be banned immediately) can be a strong deterrent. After all, there are many, easier targets online than a site that has a user authentication system in place.
Advantages
Though code-driven, this solution involves a database of users and simplified user management, so it’s not too time-consuming. The banning of offending usernames may take some time, however.
Disadvantages
Before they can post, users are forced to perform numerous extra steps, for which they may see little benefit. This can be a serious downfall if your site is just starting out and you are trying to encourage usage.
One way to make the system run a little more smoothly may be to use cookies to automatically sign in repeat users each time they visit the site. This way, when they go to post, they need not be faced with the login form: they’re already logged in and can just start to post. This option doesn’t alleviate the initial signup process, however.
More information on creating a user authentication system can be found at Developer Fusion.
2. Catch Comment Spam After it has Been Added
Catching comment spam will be necessary if you decide not to differentiate between spammers and human users. It may also be necessary if you have taken the steps above – some comment spam is almost inevitable.
This approach involves the creation of a check that occurs after the comment is submitted to identify it is spam or a legitimate post. Of course, you can go through posts manually before they’re made live, checking to ensure they’re not spam. But you can also automate the process: create a list of keywords that are common to spam, and check each post against this list. You can then weed out any comments that contain the offending words (which might include terms like Viagra, gambling, poker, meds, etc.).
This comparison can be done in various ways, and at a number of points during comment processing. Most programming languages make it very easy to check a string for given keywords. Make sure that the string’s case is also compared, by converting the string to lowercase or uppercase, before you run the comparison. If the comment is found to contain the key words, the spammer can be warned, and the comment deleted.
Advantages
This approach does not require the commenter to take any extra steps, so the comments section remains simple and easy to use.
Disadvantages
As the spammer changes the words used by the spam bot, your keyword list must also be updated. This technique will also be difficult to implement if the spammer advertises products that are relevant to your Website, your list of banned words might stop legitimate comments from being posted.
Managing Comment Spam
Spam will always be a problem. However, a well-designed site that has taken into consideration the common spamming techniques will be able to avoid most spam. The techniques we’ve explored here should help site owners effectively to battle comment spam.
Ultimately, the Webmaster needs to adapt his/her techniques to deal with spam on an ongoing basis. The secret to success, then, is continual monitoring and adaptation to spammer’s changing tactics.

Below is a tutorial i’ve had on my computer for some time (keep in mind, i’m not the origional discovor(er?) of this trick, i’m just translating it over to you). This will significantly increase your browsing speeds with Firefox IF you are using a broadband connection. I’m sure most of the webmasters out there with Firefox wouldn’t mind it going a bit faster yeah?
Step 1
Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
Step 2
Alter the following entries as shown:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
Step 3:
Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now! If the effects dont load right away, just restart firefox and you should see it

Choosing the best forum software is very critical when starting a new forum. While it may not be the key to your success, it can certainly help you along the way. A forum can be a very hard endeavor, but it can pay off in time, with a loyal user database. But how do you choose the best software for you personally? Well, that’s when you must examine what you want and what your goals are.
Within this article, I will include a brief description and recommendations for the three leading forum software companies. From there, it’s up to you to choose. Two of these are paid licenses, and one is free (open source). Keep in mind, you are not limited to only these three options. There are many other forum software systems out there that can fit your needs, Just try to find the best one for you.
A Few things to consider…
What is your price range? How much are you willing to spend? What features are an absolute necessity? Do you need forum modifications? Skins? Those are just a few of the several questions you’ll need to consider. With time you’ll conclude answers, but it’s always best to plan ahead.
vBulletin
This is a very popular forum software. You have two options as far as vBulletin goes. You can either buy an owned license, or lease one. Leased is only $80, but it’s only good for one year; after that you’ll need to renew. Owned is a license for life, but you will need to pay for updates, which are often not a necessity.
I strongly recommend getting an owned license. vBulletin has so many features, a huge user support system and a large amount of modifications through vbulletin.org. As far as I can tell, vBulletin has every desired features that other boards offer. The only major downfall, is they all come at a price.
The official site for vBulletin is: http://www.vbulletin.com/
Invision Power Board
An alternative paid forum software is Invision Power Board (commonly called IPB). Invision Board started out as free software, but began to license it’s product. The upsides of Invision Board are:
The official site for Invision Power Board is: http://invisionpower.com/
phpBB
The final forum software I will talk about her, is phpBB. This stands for PHP Bulletin Board. phpBB is an overall great open source software, however, it is known for numerous security flaws, some which you should definately consider before making it your final decision. It has the same basic features as both Invision Board and vBulletin, and plus, it’s free!
The official site for phpBB is: http://www.phpbb.com/
Now. Realizing that there are many more alternatives for forum software (perhaps hundreds?) I recommend you shop around. Compare the prices for what you’re getting. See what you think would be the best to get your community going. This article is meant to simply point you in the right direction, not make your decision for you. I wish you good luck in all your endeavors.

It’s a very obvious statement that people visit forums looking for traffic. Now the ethical dilema, is how you go about getting those visitors. In this article, I’m going to outline how to gain visitors from forums, without overstepping your boundaries. There are also some methods here to help boost conversation about your site in that advertisement.
If you can keep these 5 simple points in mind while doing your next forum bit, you’re more than likely going to see a large change and increase in conversations. I know from personal experience that you will get personal messages from these forums with people asking about your site. Just remember the rule: Keep it ethical, nothings better than having thousands of forums members, who more than likely visit similar forums, after your.

Lately, I have been speaking to several website owners to have been concerned on overwhelming their visitors with ads, but still being able to generate substantial proffit. The more common question is, “How much is too much?”. At what point will your advertisements deter visitors from returning? This answer completely depends on the kind of traffic we’re speaking of. So let’s take a glance at the few types of traffic, and the typical behavior for these types of visitors.
This may cut into your bottom line a bit at first, but the end result of improving your visitors experience will help your site grow. Make sure you are using a good analytical tool (such as Google Analytics) to track conversion rates, average depth, bounce rates, session lengths and return rate. Once you’ve monitored this traffic for a period of time, continuously test alternative methods until you’ve found the perfect balance of advertisements on your site.

Most SEO’s understand the importance of backlinks in order for a website to suceed. Most search engines take into account of backlinks quality for their ranking algorithm. In this article, I will cover the top three search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing) and discuss briefly how they handle backlinks in their point of view.
The most popular search engine, Google, places a great emphasis on backlinks. In fact, relevant backlinks is all a website needs to achieve the highest rankings in a result page. Google however, does not show all the indexed backlinks when users query with the `link:` operator. In addition, Google does not update their backlink index as frequent as their search results.
It is believed that multiple backlinks from the same domain does not have the same effect in Google. For example, links in forum signitures will have minimum weigh in Google’s ranking algorithim, if any at all.
Yahoo! on the other hand, chooses to display all of the backlinks to the users. A search with their `link:` operator often reveals most of a page’s backlinks to the screen. Although they display most of the backlinks, it does not mean that they value them as much as Google. Unfortunately, backlinks are not as important in this case as with Google.
Yahoo has also introduced a site explorer interface to aid the webmasters in locating the backlinks and other useful information. Yahoo also provides one of the best API for web maseters’ use.
Bing (Live and MSNs algorithm basics are taken into concept for this as well) also offers to display backlinks to the user with the `link:` operator query. The backlink updates in Bing also seem to happen the most frequently among the three search engines. With this, backlinks are not as important as keyword domains in Bings point of view.
In conclusion for this brief article, Google is the only search engine that puts a heavy emphasis on backlinks in their ranking formulas, and as they are seen as the most popular, backlinks are very important to your websites sucess. It is recommended to use Yahoo and Bing to get a more accurate list of your sites backlinks, are they show more completed lists, and you can manage your Google ranking better with that list.

Search Engine Optimization (more commonly referred to as SEO) is the holy grail of all internet marketing because of the allure of “free” traffic.
There is no doubt about it. Achieving a number one ranking in Google, Yahoo, or Bing for high traffic volume keywords and phrases can be extremely proffitable for any business. Because of this, SEO has been the most competitive and difficult area to achieve online success in. Think about it, there can only be on webite ranked number one, per keyword/phrase, on Google, Yahoo and Bing, in any one country. That’s a lot of competition!
But in reality, how much is that top ranking worth?
An easy way of estimating the value of a top rank in Google is by calculating the cost of a top position for a particular keyword/phrase in the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) engine. For example..
Let’s say we want to estimate the value of a #1 ranking for Googles “car insurance”. Here is a way of estimating the value of this ranking.
So here’s our formula.
(number of searches per month x CTR) x CPC = estimated value of #1 ranking
or..
(26,210 x 0.01) x $4.49 = $1,176.83
So with those calculations, the estimated value of a #1 position in Google’s “car insurance” is $1,176.83 per month!
Now if you were able to get a 2% CTR (which is very possible if you know what you’re doing), you can raise that value to $2,353.66 per month. Or in another case, 3%, which gives us $3,530.49 per month.
the reason we estimate a #1 ranking using this formula is because we can automatically get a #1 position in ANY KEYWORD PHRASE by bidding the highest amount. More importantly, getting a top ranking keyword results in “free” traffic, but it does cost time to get there.
SEO is only viable when the estimated value of the #1 ranking is higher than the total cost of getting that position through PPC advertising.
Consider the posibilities next time you want to get #1 on that ever so important keyword/phrase of yours!

Everyone knows about the millionaires of the internet. Obviously, these people become our online idols, as we despereately scrounge around trying to make just enough to get by. However, something alot of us dont realize, is we actually need to invest money to make money, and any millionaire will vouch for that. Although it may be interpretted as cheating, paying for your traffic is a faster way to make money. In our society today, money is what keeps things flowing. Without it, we would be financially despereate, and many businesses would be forced to close their doors forever.
There are many pros and cons to the website traffic world. On a positive side, if any owner were to pay for most of their traffic, they would not have to spend hours of their day trying to convince people to visit their site. Since many people have day jobs aside from their online hobbies, it is not only unrealistic, but highly difficult to keep a website updated daily, and to keep visitors steadily streaming in. After all, traffic is what powers a websites income. without hundreds of visitors a day, our websites would be pointless and, of course, would generate no substantial revenue if any revenue at all.
One of the most popular ways of generating traffic is through pay, is with programs like Google Adwords. Adwords is a pay-per-click business which allows you to pay for your traffic. The way this works, is if you have a site (ex: music downloading) and you’re dying for more users, you can buy ad space for specific keywords related to your site, and when people search Google with those keywords, they will see your website on their results page. This is a great way for any website who is need of an extra few eyes, but unfortunately, pay-per-click programs like this, can get very expensive and mitigate your income. You must realize that every click a person makes, you will be charged a certain amount of money. It is crucial to set financial limits for yourself, because it could turn out in you loosing hundreds of dollars. However, if you have a little extra money to dish out, this is a wonderful way to positively increase your traffic.
Another great way to generate more traffic is to hire a consultant. Many online businesses now employ SEO specialists or website builders. These people will do all the work neccessary for you, and will make it much easier to have high rankings in search engines. If you are the owner of your website, and don’t know much about SEO, and don’t have the time to learn more about it, it’s a great investment to have a highly knowledgable consultant do it for you. However, this can also cost thousdands of dollars, so it may be wise to create your budget before hand and stick to it. Although the money is more than worth it in the end, not everyone has that much money to invest right from the get go.
A simple, inexpensive way to generate mre traffic, is to buy adspace on popular websites. This is a great opportunity for someone who has only a few hundred dollars to spend, but would still like to generate traffic. Popular blogs and websites usually have affordable blank space available for purchase. Although there are some websites who will charge hundreds of dollars for just one months of space, there are others who sympathize with you a bit, and aren’t trying to empty your wallets with every waking breath.
A large downside to paid traffic, is often times, visitors are un-targetting. What this translates to is the visitors that come to your site, come with completely different intentions and interests. Therefore, i is smart to stay away from companies who send your website thousands of random people. Although a thousand visitors may sound like a good idea, it will hurt you in the long run. Un-targetted visitors who visit yoursite, will most likel never come back.
In conclusion, keep in mind that there are many ways to generate more traffic to your website. All of these ways will not only give you a ton of new visitors, but will generate you revenue if you have programs like Adsense on your website. After all, the more people who visit, the more expensive the venture, and the quicker it will pay off. Next time you hear about an internet millionaire making hundreds of thousands of dollars a week, you’ll understand that they probably invested just as much to make it happen.
